How to Plan for Windy, Foggy, or Cloudy Family & Wedding Photos on the Central Coast
Why unpredictable weather on the Central Coast can make your photos even more magical
If you’re planning family or wedding photography on California’s Central Coast, you already know one thing for sure: the weather here has a mind of its own. One minute you’re soaking in sunshine, and the next, coastal fog rolls in or a brisk wind sweeps through.
But here’s the good news: unpredictable weather doesn’t have to ruin your photo session. In fact, some of the most stunning and memorable images come from the weather you didn’t expect. If you want to see how we capture magical moments on the Central Coast, check out our Family Photography page.
1. Embrace the Unique Beauty of the Central Coast
The Central Coast is famous for its dynamic skies and coastal moods. While golden sunsets are breathtaking, fog and clouds create soft, diffused light that’s incredibly flattering for portraits and packed with emotion. Wind adds beautiful movement, fog lends atmosphere, and clouds provide a timeless, painterly backdrop.
These natural effects create moods that simply can’t be replicated in studio lighting. So instead of chasing perfect weather, we embrace whatever the day brings — and lean into the magic it offers.
2. Dress Smart for Coastal Weather
Layers are your best friend on the coast. Bring a sweater, wrap, or jacket that complements your outfit. You’ll stay cozy and stylish even if the breeze picks up or the fog thickens.
For windy days:
Choose flowing fabrics that catch the breeze beautifully instead of stiff materials.
Consider loosely tying back long hair or using pins to keep it out of your face.
Opt for stable footwear if we’ll be walking on sand or trails.
For cooler, foggy days:
Keep kids cozy with soft layers and blankets.
Neutrals and earth tones really pop against a foggy backdrop.
Avoid overly bright or neon colors, which can reflect oddly in diffused light. For more detailed outfit tips, check out our full guide on What to Wear for Family Photos on the Central Coast.
3. Stay Flexible with Timing and Locations
One of the best ways to work with coastal weather is to stay flexible. I always monitor the forecast closely and communicate with you as your session approaches.
We might:
Adjust the session time slightly to catch the best available light
Change beach locations if one spot is particularly windy or foggy
Move inland to avoid heavy fog and capture warmer, golden light
Because I know the Central Coast intimately, I always have a backup plan ready.
4. Trust the Process (and Your Photographer Team!)
Sometimes the best sessions happen in less-than-perfect weather. Whether it’s me or Julianna by your side, we’re here to guide you through every moment. Kids bundled in jackets, hair blowing in the breeze, fog curling around cliffs — it all adds to the authenticity and feeling of the moment.
I’ll never forget a family session on a windy Cayucos beach after a rainy day. Just as the clouds briefly parted, a massive downpour rolled in from the ocean behind them—torrential rain sweeping across the water and crashing onto the shore in a breathtaking, powerful wave of nature. For about 15 intense minutes, the storm framed the family with an incredible, dramatic backdrop.
Despite the wild weather, the wind and rain created dynamic movement and energy that made the photos unforgettable. With Julianna and I working together, and using weather-resistant gear, we captured these raw, beautiful moments that truly tell a story.
Your only job? Show up, relax, and enjoy the experience—wind, rain, fog, and all.
5. Remember the Goal: Real, Beautiful Moments
The weather doesn’t have to be perfect for your photos to be stunning. Often, the unpredictability brings out the most genuine moments — the laughter, the quiet connections, and the way the day truly felt.
When you look back at your photos, you won’t think about the fog or wind — you’ll remember the joy and love you shared.
